Ah, yes, there it is. Elizabeth, being so rank-obsessed, just assumes that Mrs C considers herself as lowly as Elizabeth does; she's just a useful companion/source of flattery/quasi-servant (whose very lowliness confirms Elizabeth's highness, to Elizabeth, at least), right? Wouldn't DARE to preSUME to be worthy of the MASter, right? I think you've got it, Lia.

That's what I love about GRs -- fellow Pemberfolk catch these little details in the text that explain so much!
