The schmoozy Mrs. Clay   Written by MaryAnn K. (10/14/2005 2:48 a.m.)
Are you new?

Oh! I have finally caught up with the reading, now to catch up with the posts! How do you guys do it?

While finishing the chapters, this scene really caught my eye, as well as JA's clever way of saying it. It is in the beginning of chapter 4, part 2, where Mrs. Clay made a "decent pretence" of meaning to leave them. Of course Elizabeth says the rude comment of Anne being nothing to her and SW earnestly urges her to stay, even to say that she has a "fine mind" that would want to see the beauty of Mrs. Wallis ( Ha! It's so funny to see the extent of thier lack of depth that a fine mind would be satisfied by just a glance of a pretty face! Anyways, tangent...).

Can't you just see it? Mrs. Clay wants strokes for all her brown-nosing and pretends to want to leave. E and SW grovel and E even snorts in Anne's direction at the thought of her leaving! Mrs. Clay has them right where she wants them, eating out of her hand. What a slimy rat!
