imagine her father "lowering" himself to actually marry Mrs Clay? IMHO, she sees Mrs Clay as a useful foil and support, not as a woman. As long as Mrs Clay flatters her, runs her errands and is a useful dogs' body, she will always be more to Elizabeth than Anne could be. If nothing else, Anne is an equal by birth so Elizabeth really could not expect Anne to make herself useful the way she can Mrs Clay.
