]On this reading of Persuasion I have come to appreciate Charles Musgrove more than I have in the past.

I'm so glad! I think he is always underappreciated here at RoP. (And being married to a "sporty" man myself, I can appreciate that, though he may not be bookish, he still has many admirable qualities!) :-)

He's also an affectionate brother, and a dutiful nephew.

From ch. 12: Charles, who, really a very affectionate
brother, hung over Louisa with sobs of grief, and could only turn his eyes from one sister, to see the other in a state as insensible, or to witness the hysterical agitations of his wife, calling on him for help which he could not give.

And ch. 10: Charles, in the meanwhile, was very decidedly declaring his resolution of calling on his aunt, now that he was so near [...].
