"Soften the business" doesn't necessarily refer only to Sir Walter either, it refers in general to the matter at hand.

Sir Walter accepts it as a complete apology but Elizabeth does not. I don't see this at all as due to Sir Walter's love for his wife. The difference between SW and Elizabeth is that Mr. Elliot's marriage for beauty is a more personal slight for Elizabeth. She must have been thinking, "And what am I, chopped liver?"
