Either way   Written by Barbara (10/11/2005 4:55 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Softened the blow, penned by Lia

Since Sir Walter is all ego, it would be hard for anything to 'soften' if it didn't soften his ego first!

But, either way, Sir Walter sees this combination of beauty, money, and being in love as decidedly mitigating circumstances, while Elizabeth doesn't quite share his opinion. This leads me to believe that Sir Walter could relate to the wish to marry such a woman because he once had done the same.
