About those library books...   Written by Maisy (10/11/2005 11:18 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, M.N.A.S.U.T.H?, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

and she had got books from the library, and changed them so often (ch. 14)

What do you suppose Mary was reading? Frankly, I can't imagine her reading anything. Perhaps it was the thrill of borrowing the books, of being seen to "change them so often," that Mary enjoyed. And that going to the library gave her something to do, someplace to be seen. Tee hee!

Notice that JA doesn't actually tell us that Mary read them. And for all her griping about Benwick, if she'd actually read something, don't you think she might have tried discussing it with him, and would have mentioned this in her diatribe against the poor man? ;-)
