The worst thing about Bath   Written by Cheryl (10/10/2005 11:53 p.m.)
Are you new?

Sir Walter and Elizabeth love, love, love Bath! But, poor Sir Walter - it seems to have an inordinate number of ugly women in it.

"He had frequently observed, as he walked, that one handsome face would be followed by thirty, or five-and-thirty, frights; and once, as he had stood in the shop in Bond Street, he had counted eighty-seven women go by, one after another, without there being a tolerable face among them." (ch 15)

Can you imagine the scene? Can't you just picture him standing there counting the women as they go by? I am torn between laughter and disgust at his incredible shallowness. How appalling self-involved and intellectually bankrupt he is. Counting eighty-seven woman. How relieved he must have been to have finally seen a pretty face. I'm sure he was reaching the limits of his counting abilities. sheesh! ;-p
