I think she's upset he has returned Written by Barbara (10/10/2005 1:54 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Contemptuous Lady Russell, penned by Robbin

"There was some anxiety mixed with Lady Russell's joy in meeting her. She knew who had been frequenting Uppercross."

To me that sounds like she's very concerned about the effect that this will have on Anne.

In a way, it's surprising that Lady Russell likes Mrs. Croft so very well, since she can't seem to get over her feelings for Frederick.
