Deaths   Written by Barbara (10/9/2005 1:57 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Is Capt. Benwick the only, penned by Rebecca Mog
Are you new?

There are not a lot of deaths that figure into the action of the novels. Most deaths are offstage or before main action of the story.

Mr. Dashwood dies at the beginning of S&S. Mrs. Churchill's death is an important plot point in Emma. The circumstances surrounding Mrs. Tilney's death are important in Northanger Abbey. Old Mr. Darcy's wishes at the time of his death figure into the action of P&P.

We have a few deaths in this novel that forward the action. There is not only Fanny Harville (the name Phoebe is used in the movie P2), but also Richard Musgrove (whose death, in part, prompts some of the interaction between Captain Wentworth and the Musgrove family), and Mrs. William Elliot.

But I don't think there are any other fiance(e)s who died. The closest would probably be Eliza Brandon--who was the colonel's fiancee, and whom he sought again following her divorce---although they would probably not have been able to marry. The gloom of temperament this caused in him is a bit similar to Captain Benwick's despondance. I can picture young Brandon indulging in melancholy poetry, etc.
