I imagine the three of them in quite tight together, shoulders and knees touching through heavy coats. No Mrs. Musgrove as a barrier. As he turns to speak quietly to her so as not to awaken Henrietta, perhaps she can feel his warm breath on her cheek.
Mary Ellen, after reading your comments I realize that I was blind to the beauty of this passage and had a serious lack of imagination, thank you. I do believe there is not a line of this novel which could not bear to be reread a million times over.
PS: Your read aloud is a wonderful idea. I am envious. :)
