whether you are suffering from some sort of actual physical illness, or are depressed, there is still that degree of responsibility which, if accepted by Mary, would enable her to consider others even when she wasn't enjoying perfect conditions for good behavior.

I'm convinced she is manipulative. JA tells us (previously cited in this thread) that under very specific conditions Mary could indeed be nice. But she requires SPECIFIC conditions, which others must meet. If they meet her requirements, she rewards them. If they don't, she punishes them. I'll bet she really enjoyed herself when she was pregnant!
