Before Lady Russell interferred, Anne and Captain Wentworth were planning a long engagement until Captain Wentworth had earned enough money to support a family. (Or possibly, one of them could have suddenly inherited enough money to marry on). Consequently Anne would not have been left poor with small children to support.
