Anne's impression of Mr Elliot   Written by Cheryl (10/5/2005 2:39 a.m.)
Are you new?

After Anne has her second run-in with Mr Elliot, these are her thoughts

"...and this second meeting, short as it was, also proved again, by the gentleman's looks, that he thought hers very lovely, and by the readiness and propriety of his apologies, that he was a man of exceedingly good manners." (ch 12)

I think it interesting that Anne could tell that he thought she pretty - a second time! How nice for our dear girl! ;-)

And after his identity is confirmed

"...it was a secret gratification to herself to have seen her cousin, and to know that the future owner of Kellynch was undoubtedly a gentleman, and had an air of good sense." (ch 12)

So, Anne's first impressions of Mr Elliot is that he is a gentleman with good manners and having good sense. Contrast this to the disdain with which he treated Sir Walter and Elizabeth. Is the difference just a matter of flirting with a pretty girl as opposed to putting up with importunate relations? And how much of Anne's good opinion is derived from the fact that he obviously admires her? ;-)
