I still think the Elliot's situation is worse than that. Lady Russell's plan to have them economize on "journeys, London, servants, horses, table" is still going to take seven years to bring them back from the predicament they are in.

Even Colonel Brandon, upon inheriting Delaford from his brother and finding it 'sadly involved' in debt, is able to bring it back in five years.

No doubt they are living far, far beyond their means, but the Elliots' situation is described as "distressed" and "heavy bills".
