Even after Trump declared bankruptcy, he was probably still spending/making 10 times more in a month the most of us make in a year.

The Elliots lived extravagantly and beyond their means. Eventually their debts overcame their ability to pay and borrow. That does not neccessarily mean they were poor - or that their income was small.
