During this time, men are always eligible and have lots more time to make good marriages than women do. Consider that Sir Walter is 54 and there is concern of his marrying Mrs Clay. No never before married woman is considered eligible at that age, for they cannot produce an heir. Women were lucky if they weren't proclaimed on the shelf by their mid-twenties.
