These are Anne's ruminations on Cpt. Bentwick's romantic misfortune. None of my English students could get away with this. What the heck? Is he younger numerically, younger in spirit, younger because men feel things less? Logically, the sentence makes no sense.
My paraphase of the line would be this: "He is older than I am, but his active naval life, with its dangers and distractions, has steered him away from morbidity, while I am always alone with my thoughts and feel my losses more."
Boy, that's inelegant.
But JA IS a genius. Theodore Dreiser had some whoppers much worse than this.
