In my reading, I noted down the latter part of your quote:

the old were so hospitable, the young so agreeable, that he could not but resolve to remain where he was, and take all the charms and perfections of Edward's wife upon credit a little longer

I would have expected him to almost immediately visit his brother, so someone or some purpose must have him under his/her/its spell. If strong feelings are still just beneath the surface (whether 'tis the lingering hurt of rejection or something else simmering), I can see him wanting to exhibit his popularity to the woman who turned him down.
