Which is sometimes worth avoiding. I find having someone who I see regularly upset at me to be a drain on my resources and a cost even if they have no real power over me (not that it isn't sometimes worthwhile upsetting people, just that it's a cost).

Also I think that Henrietta was feeling very self-conscious about the trip and wanted to avoid any questioning. The ideal of courtship in those days appears to have been that no one noticed you doing it.
