My imagery is a little enigmatic :). The child jumps on her as if she were a sofa, something of use. The rest of Anne's "friends" treat her the same. Anne makes their lives a little easier, like a comfy sofa. It's learned behavior on the part of the kiddo. As you yorself said, she is a thing, a "victrola."
