Then why all the secrecy? Why all the pretending they were just going on a walk and why imagine that they might bump into Charles Hayter without visiting the house? It's as if they were somehow forbidden to go there. I know it would upset Mary very much, but she could have no real power over them, except to make things unpleasant.
