But Anne isn't one to put herself forward, is she? She's the selfless kind, and though tired, would willingly let anyone else who expressed an interest in the ride to take it. And it sounds like she was left with no chance to even decline: "Anne was still in the lane, and though instinctively beginning to decline, she was not allowed to proceed. "
