How well known to JA's contemporaries...   Written by Delories (10/3/2005 7:31 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Lyme Regis info, penned by Cheryl

...would these steps have been?

I mean, obviously most people wouldn't actually have had a chance to visit them at the time, but how many people would have seen images of them (in books, magazines, whatever), and thereby have been aware, beyond JA's description, of what a treacherous spot it really was?

In other words, how famous a spot was Lyme Regis, in that age of incipient tourism?
