on your remark that Anne had picked up some of the Elliot snobbery. I think Austen was great at exploring complexities like the difference between true superiority and snobbery. I don't see valuing ones intellectual superiority as necessarily leading one to become a snob. Especially when it keeps one from self-pity when in a lonely place.
