I was in a group read of "Jane Eyre" on the Barnes and Noble website a few months ago when someone suggested that Helen Burns may have suffered from ADA. The reaction of some of the other participants almost drove this man from the board! It is quite possible that characters in classic novels are showing signs of physical/emotional illnesses or conditions that would be treatable today, especially if the characters are based on people known to the author. In doing some further reading I can see where Mary could be seen as suffering from depression, but she is also very manipulative, especially the way she seems to use Anne, so I'm not totally convinced that it isn't just an act.
