he's being solicitous of her welfare! Caring for her in spite of himself.

Don't you wish we could know what's going on in his mind? It's really torture not to know--and we are only interested bystanders--isn't it fun to feel a taste of what Anne feels?

I've also always wondered what his emotions are when he sits upon the sofa with Mrs. Musgrove, if he, too is conflicted by the realization that he is on the same sofa as Anne, with only a "not insubstantial barrier" between them!
