A polite thing?   Written by Ann2 (9/30/2005 3:04 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Dancing with Anne?, penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

Could he be asking for several reasons? She's not all that old and her retiring to the piano might puzzle him.

He must have thought that Anne wasn't very much in love with him, since she was "so easily" persuaded to let him go. Her appearance came as a a shock to him, because he has been thinking of her as she once was. He had no clue she has been thinking of and pining for him all these years. He must wonder where her spirit went. Perhaps he even suspects some other fellow hurt her?

I agree that he was civil enough to wish to include her in the dancing, if she was thus inclined. Could it be a hint to whomever he asked that perhaps some other lady ought to take her turn by the piano?
