Disagree about lack of walking   Written by Pennie (9/30/2005 8:53 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Distances in Persuasion, penned by Line
Are you new?

The ladies in all of her novels walk everywhere since it takes a while to set up the carriage. There's no evidence of walking so far in this book, but the Bennets walk to Meryton constantly. Emma walks to Mrs Weston's all the time. Catherine Moreland walks the not insignificant distances around Bath, and if I recall correctly, there's a long steepish hill starting from one end of the city, all the way to the other. I think they walk far greater distances than we tend to with our cars

I agree with comments about the weather, and personal preference would also play a part.
