I think it could have been   Written by Tracy W (9/29/2005 7:59 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Her appearance and character make it even more, penned by Annette J.
Are you new?

We're told that Mary has great good humour and spirits when well-attended. I could see the process going like this:

1. Charles proposes to Anne and is gently rejected.
2. On the rebound, he starts paying attentions to Mary, to show that Anne hasn't hurt him.
3. Mary, on receiving his attentions, is very happy and flattered that the older son of the local respectable squire is paying court to her (she may not know that he first proposed to Anne). She displays good humour and all the beauty that happiness generally brings.
4. Charles falls in love with this pretty, good spirited girl (aided again by the rebound thing) and proposes.
5. Mary, delighted to be married before either of her older sisters, and to be married so well, accepts.

The social mores of the time did not necessarily allow a couple to discover much about each other's personality before marrying. And sharing a house together shows someone's personality in quite a different light - it once took about two years for a friendship of mine to recover after we'd flatted together for a year. Charles might have planned an affectionate marriage, and he wouldn't have been the first person to be surprised by how the real thing turned out.
