He is not up to Captain Wentworth's standard, but like Col. Fitzwilliam in P&P, if our heroine *had* agreed to marry him, even her ex-suitor couldn't have heaped too much scorn on the match.

One of the things I like about JA is that she brought other worthwhile men into her heroine's lives, and made it quietly clear that under other circumstances the heroine(s) might have married one of these suitors.
