it's also a matter of poise. The hands/wrists could be a point of focus for refined femininity. Look closely at some of the rich portraits of beauties of the period and you will notice how hands are positioned and given an exquisite quality. One fine example can be found on the cover of "Harriett Wilson's Memoirs" where her portrait has been cropped to make her hands and wrists the center of the cover.
