I think that most people today would use their car Written by Annette J. (9/29/2005 5:06 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Distances in Persuasion, penned by Line

to travel 3 miles rather than walk the distance. I think that you and the next poster are correct that in the setting of the novel the nature of the ground to be covered (no sidewalks, having to go over fences, etc), as well as the weather and the time of day, would govern whether someone walked, rode, or was driven.
