Richard Crosby   Written by Cheryl (9/29/2005 2:19 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I have also read somewhere..., penned by Emmy
Are you new?

Close. ;-) Richard Crosby was the publisher who bought Northanger Abbey for £10 and then didn't publish it. Jane wrote to him after six years (six years!) to inquire after it and to ask to have the manuscript returned to her if he wasn't going to publish it. He replied that she could have it back if she paid him £10, which she couldn't afford, and so it just sat there. After she'd had some success and acclaim, and so more money, she had her brother buy it back for her. When he had it in hand, he took great pleasure in telling Mr Crosby that he had refused to publish a book by the author of S&S and P&P. Can you imagine the man's face? He must have kicked himself.

It's a great story. ;-)
