I have always assumed...   Written by Kim in AK (9/29/2005 1:58 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Captain Wentworth the chauvinist, penned by Jace
Are you new?

that these feelings of CW's do have something to do with his bitterness over Anne. Something along the lines that gentlewomen can't be counted on when the going gets rough, that they must be petted and pampered and coddled or they'll lose their resolve. This could be completely unfair, but I have always, from the first reading, felt that he was somehow jaded at this point, and that his attitude would have hurt Anne (although not, I think, intentionally). JA doesn't tell us, but I can imagine Anne thinking, "If I could do it over again, I'd show you just how much discomfort I could happily manage in order to be by your side!"

I don't think that he is purposely bringing up the year '06 to hurt Anne. Instead, I believe he is convinced that he is bringing it up naturally in the conversation, to show Anne that he is able to speak lightly of that time, to show her that he is quite recovered.
