Where are our naval historians?   Written by Kim in AK (9/29/2005 1:51 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Captain and Mrs Croft, penned by Liza G.
Are you new?

What was the average time span between being made Captain and being made Admiral? I think this was completely based upon seniority, if I am not confusing my facts.

We must also remember that CW was a captain without a ship when he met Anne, with no real assurance that he would ever get a ship. He really was not in a promising situation, as the Admiral so pointedly declared at the dinner party. He was lucky to get anything so soon (after being made captain). I seem to recall something about one of JA's brothers being a captain without a ship, and also being quite old when he became an Admiral?

I have always assumed that the Admiral was some years older than his wife. Partly because I assumed that an Admiral would be an older man (rightly or wrongly!), and partly because most of JA's men seem to be older when they marry, which I am assuming was not out of the ordinary in that day and time.
