In the beginning of ch. 5   Written by Joan Ellen (9/28/2005 12:32 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, LR - was she more superficial to Anne than I thought?, penned by Emmy
Are you new?

Anne thinks 'with heightened gratitude of the extraordinary blessing of one such truly sympathising friend as LR." Earlier JA mentions that LR is of sound rather than quick abilities. I interpret these passages as showing that LR really cares about and sympathises with Anne, but her ability to fully empathise with her is probably somewhat limited by the fact that she is not Anne's equal in sensitivity, degree of taste, or depth of feeling.
