You are getting ahead of the schedule here. This information is not revealed until a later chapter, and it still does not mean he planned to leave anything like the very next day.

As far as we know from the reading up to this point, there is no reason that there was such urgency to see the Captain on that very evening. He's staying three miles away. Surely Charles could have gone to see him a day or two later?
