...which is not the same thing as saying he is a 'good' father! Nor is it much praise to say that he's a better parent than Mary!

JA's language does not really support him. She makes it clear that he's basically a harmless, nice person--if not particularly useful, intelligent or inclined to pay much attention to his wife and chidlren. It's not a particularly ringing endorsement.

John Dashwood is also described as having the potential to have been a better person if he had married a better wife. It's not exactly a compliment.
