"... she had never, since the age of 14, never since the loss of her dear mother, known the happiness of being listened to, or encouraged by any just appreciation or real taste."
This made me wonder again about Lady Russell. We are told that she loved Anne and gave her every attention, yet (based on the above statement) never listened and/or encouraged her on the piano. It just seems natural that she should have done so. I begin to wonder about LR...
Another thing that confused me a bit, as I know our beloved JA was not vulgar therefore I cannot conceive of what she meant here, except perhaps that an unabbreviated name was more formal and conveyed more respect... Any ideas?
"Poor Richard had been nothing better than a thickheaded, unfeeling, unprofitable Dick Musgrove, who had never done anything to entitle himself to more than the abbreviation of his name, living or dead."
