CFW had not intended to stay long in the Kellynch/Uppercross area (there being many painful memories there I suppose). It is likely this was mentioned to the Musgroves and communicated to Charles and Mary. So there was some urgency to meet CFW this night, or perhaps not at all. CFW planned to go off into Shropshire to visit his brother shortly.
I can understand both adults being eager to meet a person, there being few new faces in a stagnant country community. Here is one who is especially interesting, having been out and about and active in recent naval campaigns they have only read about. Connected to a brother too, which must make it important to meet CFW.
I cannot blame either Charles or Mary, as the boy was doing very well and the distance away was short.
