]LR did not like this confidence, she thought it out of place considering his lack of fortune and connections

It is my opinion that LR viewed his confidence as overconfidence, which is why she thought him rather reckless and even dangerous. And Rae's information about Captain Graham Moore (re: prospects in the navy), supports LR's opinion.
