than many other men of his time in regard to his interaction with children when they are very young, but perhaps he is different than the other characters you cited. I too can see them as men who would sit at the bedside of a sick child. As to Charles and his interaction with Mary, I am surprised he pays any attention to that nag at all! She is most irritating and not nice to the only sister who spends any time with her.
