I don't think that Charles is all that much different Written by Annette J. (9/28/2005 4:47 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Sensible fellow?, penned by Barbara

than many other men of his time in regard to his interaction with children when they are very young, but perhaps he is different than the other characters you cited. I too can see them as men who would sit at the bedside of a sick child. As to Charles and his interaction with Mary, I am surprised he pays any attention to that nag at all! She is most irritating and not nice to the only sister who spends any time with her.
