... as a result of heading back to sea again, then it would have been a bad decision. Wentworth apparently came close to dying in a storm in the Asp.

And, on the other side, if Anne had maintained their engagement, he might have dashed out, determined to make his money as fast as possible so they could then marry.

There are many cases where a decision can easily turn out either right or wrong and the result is not really predictable ahead of time. I think this engagement was one of them, and personally I'm starting to think that Anne and Wentworth would have been better off maintaining it, looking at how sad she is now.
