The bit about him having "nothing to do" makes me think, partly, that he didn't have any assignments at the time and was pretty much spending his time being idle, falling in love and all that :). So if they had remained engaged he would have been in no hurry to seek out something to do at sea (i.e. captaining the Asp). This is also assuming that he wouldn't have been ordered to sea at that time. So I suppose her rejection helped him by forcing him to want to do something useful as a distraction from her. He just had the great good fortune to come up with a few thousand pound in the process. All my conjecture of course.
