I've often wondered that too   Written by Barbara (9/27/2005 6:04 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Was it the right decision?, penned by helena6

Not only was he free to take command of the Asp at that time, and no reason to turn it down, but I believe he also had even more motivation than he would otherwise have had to prove himself.

The Asp (depending on whose story you believe!) was not really seaworthy for such a voyage and such adventures as Wentworth had with her. Maybe the young captain, having no reason not to, took more risks than he otherwise might have done. How much did those risks factor into his 'luck' and how unwilling might he have been to take them with a dear young wife waiting for him at home?
