especially when it is made by someone who meant/means so much to you is very wounding. The fact that it was relayed at all indicates Anne's emotional isolation from the rest of her family, both biological and extended. In the movie version with Amanda Root I believe that after hearing the comment she goes to look at herself in the mirror and traces the lines around her mouth with her finger...very sad.
