I can only presume (from what I've read so far) that his pride was hurt from Anne's rejection. As has been established in posts lower on the board that this was not CW's finest hour, he left in a huff and let his pride get in the way. He was quite angry (and felt ill-used). I think Anne thought he might come back once he made his fortune based on her thoughts in this week's chapters, yet he didn't. Pride. I tell you! It's a curse of the JA men! ;)
