The numbers following the name of a ship refer to the number of carriage guns. The number does not include carronades, which are short-barreled lightweight guns. They were used for firing heavy shots over a short distance. It also excludes the number of swivel guns. The number of guns also identified the "rating" of the ship and number of gun decks.
