In JA's own family... Written by Maisy (9/26/2005 8:04 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I wonder though if this was a major concern of people in, penned by Annette J.

the children were "farmed out" for the first 1-2 years, after being weaned from their mother. A local village woman was then given keep of the child "until it was old enough to be easily managed at home" (p. 7, Jane Austen: A Life, Claire Tomalin).

The amount of attention Charles shows his children (aged 2 and 3) may not seem quite so harsh in light of this information.
